The Godfrey Street Community House came into being as a result of a band of women fighting for a place for women in the community.

They held their inaugural meeting on May 2 1983 at the Moorabbin Town Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to gather support for the House.

A local woman was also a member for the Moorabbin Council and was able to access a Council owned property which was earmarked for a car park and was rented out to a group. After the group vacated, the house was then developed to become what we know today as the ‘Godfrey Street Community House’

After a turbulent couple of years, in 1985 Godfrey Street Community House was officially opened by the Mayor of the City of Moorabbin, Councillor Keith Duckmanton, with a barbeque and tree planting.

When celebrating the 25th year of Godfrey Street Community House, Ann Barker MP who was a member for Bentleigh at the time of establishment stated ‘It is with great pleasure that I see Godfrey Street Community House’ still powering on after so many years.
